Robina Private Hospital launches Queensland-first binge eating disorder treatment program

Exclusive channel 9 news coverage captures our new binge eating disorder treatment program.

Our new binge eating disorder program aims to give patients control over the compulsive excessive eating and extreme feelings of distress associated with Australia's most common eating disorder.

The evidence-based eight-week program is one of only a few across Australia and is supported by an inpatient program as required to treat binge eating disorder, which is estimated to account for about 47 per cent of all eating disorders in the country.

Case number of binge eating disorders have spiked as a result of the pandemic affecting around 1 million people in Australia.

Director of eating disorders at Robina Private Hospital, Dr Vinay Garbharran explains, "it's a genuine problem. Eating disorders is not a choice, it's not a matter of people being lazy or letting themselves go."

"[During this time] people have become very distressed and anxious. In some cases, food has been seen as a way to emotionally regulate", says eating disorders specialist; Dr Kim Hurst.
