This 12-month program is based on Marsha Linehan’s Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Skills Group Program (DBT).  The goals are to provide you with skills to help tolerate intense feelings and learn to manage self-harming behaviours building a life worth living. The 4 modules of Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness are taught within the first 6 months of the program with the modules then repeated. 
 

This program may be suitable for you if:

  • You have a hard time maintaining the relationships in your life.
  • You would like to learn new skills in order to change self-harm behaviours.
  • You are ready to learn new skills and commit to group therapy.

What you will experience

Throughout this program you will participate in group sessions lead by two qualified Allied Health Professionals. Participants will be supported to learn practical skills in order to better accept who you are, build skills to regulate emotions and to improve interpersonal relationships. You will practice applying skills throughout the week through homework and bring what you have learnt and experienced to each group for feedback and input.

Treatment objectives

Objective 1

Understanding Mindfulness – learn to be self-aware and in the present moment. Develop mindfulness skills to better respond to difficult situations.

Objective 2

Distress Tolerance – learn and develop skills to manage your emotions rather than using harmful behaviours when in emotional crisis.

Objective 3

Emotional Regulation – gain a better understanding of emotions and learn skills to recognise yours and have more control over them.

Objective 4

Interpersonal Effectiveness – learn key communication skills to strengthen current relationships and build new ones. You will learn to establish healthy boundaries while respecting your needs and the needs of others.

For you to access this program, we need a valid referral from a medical practitioner to a psychiatrist with admission rights to Robina Private Hospital. How much does it cost?

Participants are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. Privately paying is also an option. We ask that patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with Robina Private Hospital by calling 07 5665 5100.

Who will find this program helpful?

This program may be useful for people diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, or who self-harm, have intense and unstable mood states as well as unstable relationships.

When does this treatment start, and how long does it take?

This treatment requires a strong commitment to therapy. It comprises of 2 cycles of 3x eight-week modules with intake opening every eight weeks. Participants will attend one session per week from 9:00am to 2:30pm. Morning tea and lunch is provided.
