About Dual Diagnosis Program

This 12-session program is based on the philosophy of First Step supporting you to understand your addiction and learn skills and strategies to help cope with stresses in your life without relying on substances. It is based on Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy (CBT) principles as well as use of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills.
 

This program may be suitable for you if:

  • You have been feeling stuck in a cycle difficult emotions and would like this to change.

What you will experience

Throughout this program you will participate in group sessions lead by a qualified Allied Health Professional. You will be supported to identify and understand your addiction and self-guide your recovery. You will learn new skills and will practice applying them in your own day-to-day before the next session. Then, bring what you have learnt and experienced to each group for feedback and input.

Treatment objectives

Objective 1

Understanding addiction and coping with cravings – learn what addiction is and develop strategies to manage triggers and cravings.

Objective 2

Distress Tolerance and Sensory Modulation – learn how to use distress tolerance skills and use sensory input to manage crises and extreme emotions.

Objective 3

Recognise Unhelpful Thoughts – learn to challenge unhelpful thoughts and gain an understanding of your core beliefs and how these can drive your behaviour.

Objective 4

Communication Styles and Conflict Management – Learn strategies to improve your communication skills to manage and support the relationships in your life.

Understanding Emotions – learn to understand the role of emotions and strategies to manage strong emotions in a healthier way.

For you to access this program, we need a valid referral from a medical practitioner to a psychiatrist with admission rights to Robina Private Hospital. Who will find this program helpful?

The Dual Diagnosis Program is designed for people who identify with addiction and mental health. The program requires patients to be stable and able to attend the group on a regular basis with a clear commitment to change addictive behaviours.

When does this treatment start, and how long does it take?

This treatment is designed to be completed within 12-weeks. Participants will attend the program every Monday from 9:00am to 2:30pm. Morning tea and lunch is provided. The treatment can be started any week of the year and is for admitted patients only.

How much does it cost?

Participants are admitted as a day patient and as such, can claim their attendance via their health fund. Privately paying is also an option. We ask that patients confirm any applicable out-of-pocket excess or gap costs directly with Robina Private Hospital by calling 07 5665 5100.
